GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS
The Ensina Biotec Journal is dedicated to scientific dissemination and accepts two types of submissions: scientific news articles and experience reports structured to disclose extension activities developed in Brazilian/foreign educational institutions, resulting from research and activities that contribute to knowledge in the areas of Science Education and Biotechnology.
Submissions should be made in Word format (.doc, .docx, .txt) through the form available at Submit your work here and must follow all the guidelines listed below:
1. SCIENTIFIC NEWS ARTICLES
Scientific news articles should be based on recent, unpublished scientific papers, published within the last 2 years in reputable scientific journals, preferably authored by Brazilian research groups. It is essential that the articles are not in preprint status. The author of the news article should be different from the author of the article being reported.
Scientific news articles should include all the elements and characteristics outlined below:
Language of the text: A scientific news article is aimed at a general audience, outside the academic community. Therefore, the language should be formal, simple, and fluid, while avoiding the use of foreign words and technical terms that are characteristic of the scientific field. If necessary, these terms should be explained in parentheses immediately after the term used. Analogies, comparisons, metaphors, and other figurative language may be used to facilitate the reader's understanding. Additionally, the text should be written in the third person and in an objective, impartial manner.
Scientific basis: The news article must be scientifically grounded. News articles without scientific references, or that contain common knowledge, personal opinions, or "assumptions," will not be accepted. Scientific news articles based on preprint articles will also not be accepted.
Structure of the text: The submitted file should generally not exceed 3 pages. Therefore, it is important to synthesize the text as much as possible and select the topics to be addressed to stay within the limit.
The texts should be written in Times New Roman, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing, justified alignment, and no indentation. All margins should be 2.5 cm. Titles, subtitles, and headings should follow a different configuration (described in the respective sections below).
It is important to note that a scientific news article should be written differently from scientific papers. A scientific news article has a similar structure to journalistic news and follows the "inverted pyramid" method, where the main points of the article (conclusions of the research) are described right at the beginning. For better understanding, consult the model or check previously published news in our journal.
The topics marked with * are mandatory for submission.
*Title/Headline: Choose an attractive title that engages the reader. The title should not exceed 110 characters (including spaces) and should be written in Times New Roman, uppercase, size 14, bold, and centered.
*Subheading: The subheading is an engaging part complementing the title that facilitates understanding of the news. It should be a summary in a single objective paragraph, containing a brief conclusion of the news. The subheading should be placed directly below the title, respecting a maximum of 300 characters (including spaces), in Times New Roman, size 12, italic, single-spaced, and centered.
*Figures and images: It is essential that news articles contain images to help readers understand the content. The figures do not need to be directly related to the work in question, but should have some kind of relation. Additionally, the figure should not violate copyright policies. When submitting the work, proof of authorization from the copyright holder must be submitted if the image is owned by third parties (template here). Also, for images from image banks, proof of public domain status must be attached.
For images owned by the author(s) of the article, a statement indicating ownership of the image and granting permission for its use by the Ensina Biotec Journal must be submitted (template here).
All figures/images must be submitted in separate files, in tif, jpg, or png formats, with a resolution sufficient for evaluation of all the elements presented.
*Caption for images and figures: The caption should provide a brief description of the figure and be placed directly below the image, written in Times New Roman, size 10, justified alignment, and should not exceed 250 characters (including spaces). The caption must also include the source, respecting copyright policies.
Example: Curimba fish (Prochilodus argenteus). One of the migratory fish species of the São Francisco River. Source: Fulano de tal - own authorship.
*Lead: The lead is the first paragraph of the news article. It presents the main facts of the reported article and should answer the following questions: What? Who? Where? When? How? Why?
The news can be divided into more than one paragraph, which should be placed below the figure. The text must follow the formatting guidelines for continuous text, described in the "Structure of the Text" section, and should respect the 1500-character (including spaces) limit.
*Subtitles and development: The following paragraphs should include further details that can complement and elaborate on the news, such as methodology, criteria, and parameters defined by the researchers, and results obtained.
The topics following the lead should be separated by subtitles for each theme. The subtitles should have a maximum of 35 characters (including spaces), in Times New Roman, size 12, bold, with one line space (enter) from the previous paragraph. The development text should follow the continuous text formatting described in the "Structure of the Text" section, with a maximum of 1600 characters (including spaces).
*Conclusion: The conclusion is the last paragraph of the news article and should provide perspectives, final considerations, or recommendations for future work related to the topic. The subtitle should have a maximum of 35 characters (including spaces), in Times New Roman, size 12, bold, with one line space (enter) from the previous paragraph. The conclusion text should follow the continuous text formatting, described in the "Structure of the Text" section, with a maximum of 1600 characters (including spaces).
Footnote: If necessary, any technical details regarding the reported article can be included as a footnote after the last paragraph of the news article. The footnote should be written in Times New Roman, size 10, justified alignment, and single-spaced.
*References: The bibliographic reference should be the scientific article used as a reference for writing the scientific news article. The subtitle should be in Times New Roman, size 12, bold, with two-line spaces (enter) from the previous paragraph. The reference text should be in Times New Roman, size 12, single-spaced.
The reference should follow the Brazilian Guideline ABNT NBR 6023 standard, including key elements for the reader to access the full paper: Author(s). Title of the work. Journal name, city, volume, issue, pages, year. DOI: doi link.
Example:
FERREIRA, Cyntia Silva et al. Use of gold nanorods for the development of practical lessons in nanotechnology. Química Nova, São Paulo, v. 40, n. 5, p. 594-601, 2017. DOI: 10.21577/0100-4042.20170021.
2. EXPERIENCE REPORTS
Experience reports should be structured to disclose extension activities developed in Brazilian/Foreign educational institutions, resulting from research and activities that contribute to knowledge in the areas of Science Education and Biotechnology.
Structure of the text: The submitted file should generally not exceed 5 pages. Texts should be written in Times New Roman, size 12, single-spaced, justified alignment, with no paragraph indentation. All margins should be 2.5 cm. The title and subtitles should follow a different configuration:
- The title should be centered on the first line of the first page in Times New Roman, size 14, bold, uppercase, and single-spaced.
- The titles of each section should be left-aligned, numbered with Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc.). Times New Roman, size 12, bold, uppercase.
- The subtitles of the sections should be left-aligned, numbered with Arabic numerals for subdivisions (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.), Times New Roman, size 11, normal, uppercase.
Footnote: If necessary, technical details about the reported activity may be included in footnotes at the end of the pages. Each footnote should be written in Times New Roman, size 10, justified alignment, and single-spaced.
Figures: It is important that the report includes images illustrating the activity. Each figure must have a caption and must not violate copyright law.
Final considerations: The last paragraph of the text should present the final considerations regarding the disclosed activity. It may also include the authors' perceptions, recommendations for further readings or other works related to the topic, and any other relevant matters. If the author does not wish to keep the subtitle "Final Considerations," another subtitle may be used, provided it does not exceed 35 characters (including spaces), in Times New Roman, size 12, bold, with one line space (enter) from the previous paragraph. The text should follow the continuous text format, with a maximum of 1600 characters (including spaces).
References: References should follow the Brazilian Guideline ABNT NBR 6023 standard.
